Global rail trends: Brightline bankruptcy in U.S. amid Vietnam's infrastructure expansion
The global high-speed rail landscape shows contrasting developments in the United States and Vietnam. In the U.S., the private rail company Brightline recently filed for bankruptcy due to insufficient revenue to cover debts, despite maintaining operations in Florida and pursuing ambitious plans for a high-speed line between Las Vegas and Southern California. Experts attribute the lack of high-speed rail in the U.S. to a lack of government funding and a dominant car culture.
Conversely, Vietnam is aggressively expanding its railway infrastructure. Major projects include a proposed 8-route railway network in the Ho Chi Minh City area with an estimated investment of $20.8 billion, and the development of five metro lines in Hanoi aimed for completion by 2030. Additionally, a North-South high-speed railway project valued at over $67 billion is targeted to begin construction in December 2027. International cooperation is also evident, with Siemens expected to provide trains and technology transfers for VinSpeed projects.
