Global regions implement Extended Producer Responsibility for waste

Egypt is advancing plans to implement an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system to strengthen waste management and support a circular economy. Under Egypt’s Waste Management Law No. 202 of 2020, producers and importers will be required to report the volumes of packaging materials they place on the market. An electronic platform via the National System for Waste Information and Data Management (WIMS) is ready to facilitate registration and disclosure.

In Canada, the City of Red Deer is expanding its recycling program as part of an EPR initiative. Starting October 1, the list of acceptable items for blue cart recycling will grow to include plastic bags, foam packaging, aluminum foil, aerosol cans, and various paper laminates. This expansion aims to shift the recycling burden to producers. Circular Materials, a non-profit organization, assumed management of community recycling programs in April 2025 and is expected to take full control of local recycling by April 2027.
