Global regulators tighten stablecoin rules as T. Rowe Price defends crypto ETF

Global regulators in the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, and Hong Kong are implementing sweeping new rules for stablecoins. These policies aim to increase oversight of cross-border transfers, allowing authorities to identify, freeze, or redirect transactions to align digital assets with traditional financial institution standards.

In the United States, the Treasury has proposed regulations via the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network to increase traceability and reduce anonymity in line with the GENIUS Act. The UK is adopting a dual-layer framework through the Financial Conduct Authority to oversee fiat-backed stablecoin issuance and retail payments.

Concurrently, asset manager T. Rowe Price is defending its inclusion of memecoins in a new crypto ETF, viewing such assets as a "blockchain 'stress test.'" The firm utilizes an active management approach, evaluating assets based on blockchain technology, token economics, ecosystem growth, and market momentum rather than simply tracking market-cap-weighted indexes.
