Global religious leaders call for release of Lee Man-hee

Global religious leaders and human rights advocates are calling for the release of Lee Man-hee, the 95-year-old founder and chairman of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, who is currently detained in South Korea.

During a joint assembly involving approximately 2,000 religious leaders across the United States, Europe, and Asia, participants endorsed a declaration titled ‘Declaration of 2,000 Global Church Leaders for Freedom of Religion and Human Dignity.’ The group expressed concern regarding religious persecution and the protection of human dignity.

In South Korea, academics and human rights defenders have raised concerns regarding due process and the treatment of elderly detainees. Lee was arrested in June 2026 on allegations of political and election interference, charges which he and his associates deny. Advocates have noted that public perception of the movement is often influenced by religious opponents labeling the group a ‘sect’ or ‘heresy.’ While expressing respect for South Korea’s democratic institutions and judicial system, activists have highlighted the need to consider international human rights standards regarding freedom of belief.
