Global research emphasizes tailored strategies for dementia prevention

A global study involving more than 214,000 older adults across 14 countries indicates that dementia prevention strategies must be tailored to specific regional health profiles. Research published in The Lancet Healthy Longevity suggests that while some risk factors like cardiovascular issues and unhealthy habits cluster globally, different populations face varying primary challenges, such as low education levels in some regions versus obesity in others.

In Australia, dementia is a leading cause of death, with cases expected to double over the next 25 years. Experts emphasize that aged care providers must implement proactive dementia strategies, focusing on workforce training and environmental design. The World Health Organisation notes that up to 45% of cases may be prevented or delayed through interventions such as managing diet, social engagement, physical activity, and chronic conditions.
