Global security faces rising risks amid shifting power dynamics

Global security faces increasing risks due to rising geopolitical tensions, regional conflicts, and an escalating arms race. The current international landscape is characterized by uncertainty and growing friction between major powers, which impacts global trade, energy, and economic stability. The expansion of military capabilities by various nations has created a cycle of insecurity and diminished trust.

During the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly on September 22, 2026, Secretary-General António Guterres addressed the shifting nature of global power. He identified three major transitions: the emergence of new economic and technical power centers, the transfer of influence from governments to large corporations and influential individuals, and the increasing role of artificial intelligence in decision-making processes.

Guterres emphasized the need for a multipolar yet interconnected global system governed by international law and cooperation. He warned that if the world divides into opposing blocs, existing crises will become more complex, urging nations to prioritize collective solutions for challenges that affect all of humanity.
