Global seismic activity and recent Tyrrhenian Sea tremors
Recent seismic activity in regions such as Venezuela, Colombia, Indonesia, and Japan has fueled public perception that global earthquake frequency is increasing. However, experts suggest this perception may be driven by increased media coverage, social media amplification, and cognitive biases such as the 'recency bias' and the 'frequency illusion.'
In the southern Tyrrhenian Sea, two recent earthquakes with magnitudes of 3.0 and 2.9 occurred deep underwater near the coast of Palermo and Ustica. While these tremors caused no damage to people or structures, they highlight the geological dynamism of the region. Experts continue to monitor the area due to the presence of submarine volcanoes, including Marsili and Vavilov, which pose potential tsunami risks.
