Global shifts in packaging regulations and plastic waste taxes

European and American nations are implementing new regulations and taxes to manage packaging waste and encourage recycling.

In the United States, California's SB 343 'Truth in Labeling' law has taken effect, setting strict requirements for packaging to be labeled as recyclable based on local collection and sorting capabilities. Research from the Sustainable Packaging Coalition suggests consumers are seeking clearer, text-based instructions rather than just symbols to improve recycling accuracy.

Slovenia is shifting the financial burden of waste management toward producers. New rules will see manufacturers covering 80 percent of municipal packaging collection costs, which could reduce household waste bills by up to 45 percent. The government also plans to ban single-use condiment portions and certain small hotel toiletries by 2030.

Germany is considering a new plastic packaging tax of 550 euros per ton, scheduled for July 2027. The measure aims to incentivize reduced plastic use and could generate up to 1.5 billion euros in annual revenue. While environmental groups support the plan, industry representatives have criticized it as a 'national tax experiment.'
