Global Ship Lease posts $3.2 bn backlog and orders new containerships
Global Ship Lease (GSL) reported contracted revenue of $3.2 billion, adding $1.45 billion in the first half of 2026 through new charters, extensions and initial contracts for newer vessels. Net profit for the six‑month period was $180.7 million, with operating revenue in Q2 reaching $198.7 million, up 3.5% from the same quarter a year earlier. Adjusted EBITDA slipped slightly to $131.4 billion from $134.2 billion, reflecting higher operating costs, while fleet utilisation remained high at 96.7% in Q2 and 97.4% in the first half.
The company also placed orders for 15 new medium‑size containerships, costing about $1.33 billion, with deliveries scheduled between Q3 2028 and Q1 2030. These vessels are designed for refrigerated cargo and feature a wide‑beam design. CEO George Giourkos said geopolitical uncertainty and supply‑chain reshuffling are increasing demand for flexible, mid‑size ships, allowing GSL to lock in long‑term charters. Analysts note that while the expanded investment programme offers growth potential, it also raises financing requirements and will test the balance between cash‑flow stability and capital commitments.
