Global shipping industry faces influx of 4,297 new vessels by 2028

The global shipping industry is preparing for a significant influx of new capacity. Between 2027 and 2028, approximately 4,297 new vessels are scheduled for delivery, marking one of the largest waves of new capacity in recent years. This includes 2,183 deliveries in 2027 and 2,114 in 2028. Tankers and containerships account for nearly half of this total, with 1,077 tankers and 1,059 containerships expected to enter the market.

Currently, geopolitical disruptions and changes in trade routes have acted as a buffer by increasing voyage distances and limiting available vessel supply. However, a de-escalation of geopolitical tensions could lead to shorter trade routes, potentially increasing capacity and impacting charter rates.

In specific market developments, four shipping companies have placed new orders for Vinga-class tankers, citing a promising future for medium-sized tankers in Europe. Additionally, Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) is expanding its fleet with its second of seven methanol-powered newbuilds being constructed in China.
