Global South concept evolves as a tool for shifting world power
The concept of the ‘Global South’ is emerging as an evolving geopolitical category that reflects shifts in global power. While the term lacks precise geographic boundaries, experts suggest it functions as an analytical tool similar to ‘the West’.
Major powers are actively competing to define and represent this identity. China seeks to consolidate the Global South as a political identity, India has hosted summits under the ‘Voice of Global South’ banner, and Brazil utilizes the concept to project itself as a middle power.
Despite this shared identity, the Global South is not a monolithic political actor. Member nations possess vastly different political regimes, levels of economic development, and strategic interests that often conflict as they compete for markets, technology, and international influence.
