Global spirits market sees 3% volume decline in 2025
The global spirits market experienced a contraction in 2025, with volumes decreasing by 3%. While overall alcoholic beverage volumes fell by 2%, the decline in spirits was more pronounced. However, excluding national spirits like Chinese baijiu, volumes remained largely stable.
Market trends show significant polarization. Whisky volumes grew by 2% globally, driven almost entirely by a 4% increase in Indian whisky. In contrast, Scotch whisky fell by 2%, Japanese whisky by 3%, and Canadian whisky by 1%. Irish whisky saw a 2% increase. Tequila also performed well with a 2% volume increase, specifically seeing an 8% rise in the ultra-premium segment.
Industry experts surveyed in the ProSpirits Report 2026 indicate a period of transformation and a search for stability. While 56% of professionals expect purchase volumes to remain stable in 2026, only 19% anticipate positive growth. The sector is facing pressures such as selective consumption, price sensitivity, and increased competition from non-alcoholic beverages.
