Wall Street ends week higher on AI optimism and easing oil prices

U.S. stock markets ended the week on a positive note, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500, and Nasdaq Composite all recording gains. The rally was supported by a retreat in oil prices and optimism regarding diplomatic efforts in the Middle East. Reports indicated that Iran has submitted a proposal to Washington aimed at resolving hostilities and unblocking the Strait of Hormuz, which helped ease energy supply concerns.

In the technology sector, artificial intelligence optimism continued to drive market sentiment. Microsoft saw gains following the introduction of new AI features for its Copilot application, and Akamai Technologies announced a multiyear cloud-services deal with Anthropic valued at at least $11.6 billion.

However, the markets faced significant pressure from the bond market. Treasury yields reached multi-year highs, with the 10-year yield hitting levels not seen since 2007 and the 30-year yield reaching levels not seen since 2004. Additionally, consumer sentiment data from the University of Michigan showed a decline, reflecting ongoing concerns regarding inflation and the cost of living.
