Global strategic materials market: PPE and PVDF growth and supply risks

The global markets for Polyphenylene Ether (PPE) and Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) are experiencing significant shifts driven by high-tech demand and geopolitical vulnerabilities.

The PPE market, projected to reach between $1.4 billion and $1.8 billion by 2026, is characterized by an oligopoly of only five major global producers. Growth is fueled by telecommunications infrastructure and electric vehicle (EV) batteries. However, the supply chain faces risks, including the shutdown of a Jubail plant in 2026 and anti-dumping duties imposed by China on US-made PPE.

Similarly, the PVDF market is expected to grow from $4.1 billion in 2026 to $13.7 billion by 2032, driven largely by its role as a binder in lithium-ion batteries. While companies like Arkema are expanding capacity in North America and China to serve the semiconductor and energy storage sectors, the market faces volatility. The slowdown in the European EV market has already led to significant financial impacts, such as Kureha recording a 34 billion yen impairment loss on manufacturing equipment due to delayed demand recovery.

Both sectors are seeing a strategic move toward high-purity grades for specialized applications in semiconductors, water treatment, and 5G/6G communications to mitigate the risks associated with commodity-grade competition and regional EV market fluctuations.
