The United States was noted as a particularly challenging region to rank due to its significant influence on the genre. Pioneers such as Fates Warning, Queensrÿche, and Dream Theater were highlighted alongside prominent modern acts including Tool, Mastodon, Periphery, Symphony X, BTBAM, and Rivers of Nihil.

Other nations with notable progressive metal scenes mentioned include Sweden, Finland, Canada, and Norway. The selection process also aimed to highlight unexpected contributors to the genre from regions such as Brazil and El Salvador.
