Global syphilis cases reach 8 million annually amid rising infection rates
The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), in collaboration with Positive Voice and Checkpoint Sexual Health and Prevention Centers, has launched the “Syphilis Is Serious” campaign. The initiative aims to raise awareness and encourage testing and early treatment as syphilis cases continue to rise both in Greece and globally.
Globally, approximately 8 million new syphilis cases are recorded each year. The infection is transmitted through sexual or close physical contact and often remains asymptomatic or latent for years, allowing it to spread undetected. If left untreated, the infection can cause severe damage to the brain, heart, and other organs.
Dr. Adele Schwartz Benzaken, Global Medical Director of AHF, noted that the disease is frequently overlooked because many individuals do not recognize the symptoms or exhibit none at all. While the infection can be detected through simple testing and treated with antibiotics, the campaign emphasizes the importance of incorporating regular sexual health screenings into routine care.
