Global Temperatures Rise 1.39°C as Climate Funding Cuts Deepen; Permafrost May Turn Carbon Source by Mid-Century

A consortium of more than 70 leading scientists reported that global temperatures have risen 1.39 °C above pre‑industrial levels by 2025, nearing the 1.5 °C threshold that the UN IPCC warns could be reached by 2030. The study highlighted the added risk of a super‑El Niño in 2026 and warned that cuts to climate‑monitoring budgets—particularly those implemented by the U.S. administration—are degrading satellite and ocean observation networks.

A separate study led by French climate scientists, in partnership with Chinese and Swedish research centres, found that deep permafrost in the Northern Hemisphere will stop acting as a carbon sink and become a net source of CO₂ by around 2055. Incorporating data on Yedoma deposits and peatlands, the researchers estimate the release of roughly 32 petagrams of carbon—earlier than previous model projections—underscoring the need for improved climate‑feedback modelling.
