Global temperatures rise amid increasing extreme weather events
Global temperatures are rising significantly, with predictions suggesting a high of +1.7°C this year, up from +1.2°C five years ago. This warming is compounded by a record El Niño event.
Extreme weather patterns have become increasingly frequent and severe, including the first hurricane to strike Hawaii in 34 years, widespread fires across the Mediterranean from Spain to Greece, and successive heat domes affecting Europe and North America. These events have resulted in thousands of excess deaths.
Despite these visible impacts, there is a noted shift in climate change denialism. Rather than flatly disbelieving the science, some individuals are moving toward a position of resignation, arguing that the situation is already too late to rectify, which serves as a justification for continued fossil fuel consumption.
