Global tipping customs and travel etiquette guide
Tipping customs vary significantly across the globe, and what is considered polite in one country may be viewed as an insult in another.
In North America, tipping is a standard expectation. In the United States and Canada, it is a vital part of income for hospitality workers, with restaurant tips typically ranging from 18 to 22 percent. Mexico follows a similar practice, with common tips between 10 and 15 percent.
European practices are more diverse. In France and Italy, service charges are often included, making additional tips optional, though 5 to 10 percent is common for exceptional service. In Germany and Austria, rounding up the bill is a standard way to show appreciation. Conversely, in Scandinavian countries like Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, extra money is generally not expected, though rounding up remains a kind gesture.
In Asia, customs can be quite different; for instance, in Japan, leaving a tip can be perceived as impolite.
