Global tire industry ownership and manufacturing markings

The global tire market is dominated by a few major corporations that own numerous well-known brands. For instance, the German group Continental owns brands such as Barum, General Tire, Gislaved, Mabor, Matador, Sportiva, Semperit, and Viking. In Europe, Uniroyal belongs to Continental, whereas in the United States, it is owned by Michelin, which also manages BFGoodrich, Kleber, Kormoran, Tigar, and Riken.

American company Goodyear owns brands including Cooper, Debica, Sava, and Fulda. The brand Dunlop transitioned to the Japanese manufacturer Sumitomo in 2025, which also manages Falken. Additionally, the Indian manufacturer Apollo Tyres owns the Vredestein brand.

Regarding manufacturing, thin colored lines found on new tire treads serve as internal identification marks for different rubber mixtures and materials during production. These lines are not standardized across the industry; a specific color may have different meanings depending on the manufacturer. While these markings are useful for factory automation and quality control, they hold no universal meaning for consumers. Instead, consumers should focus on sidewall information, such as dimensions, load and speed indices, and the four-digit production date code.
