Global Tobacco & Nicotine Forum 2026 held in Lisbon

The 2026 Global Tobacco & Nicotine Forum (GTNF) took place in Lisbon in early September, bringing together regulators, scientists, public health experts, and industry representatives. The annual conference focused on innovation, the evolution of regulatory frameworks for nicotine products, and the concept of tobacco harm reduction.

During the discussions, Kingsley Wheaton, Chief Corporate Officer at BAT, advocated for a science-based approach to harm reduction. He noted that public debate frequently lacks a clear distinction between nicotine and the harmful effects caused by tobacco combustion. Wheaton argued that the primary danger of smoking is the inhalation of products resulting from combustion rather than nicotine itself. He suggested that policy should shift from the total elimination of nicotine toward reducing smoking rates and health impacts by encouraging adult smokers to switch to lower-risk alternatives.
