Global tourism and business travel sectors show strong growth and rebounding confidence

Global tourism and business travel sectors are experiencing significant growth and rebounding confidence. The World Economic Forum’s 10th edition of the Travel & Tourism Development Index (TTDI) 2026 reports that 101 out of 110 evaluated economies improved their performance between 2024 and 2026, with average index scores rising by 2.1%.

Japan, the United States, Spain, Australia, and France are identified as the top global performers. While emerging markets in the Asia-Pacific region are narrowing the gap with established destinations, the industry faces challenges including declining affordability in 75% of surveyed economies, rising costs, geopolitical friction, and labor shortages.

Concurrently, business travel sentiment has strengthened. A Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) poll indicates that 63% of travel professionals are optimistic about the industry outlook heading into 2027, a notable increase from 41% in April. This rebound follows previous uncertainty regarding geopolitical conflicts and fuel prices, with industry leaders noting a shift toward more deliberate and strategic corporate travel.
