Global tourism industry projected to outpace economic growth
The global tourism industry is projected to outpace general economic growth. According to Esteban Velazquez Wilhem of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) at the AMDETUR 2026 Congress, the sector's contribution to global GDP grew by 4.1% in 2025, compared to a 2.8% growth in the overall global economy. The industry accounted for approximately 10% of global GDP and was linked to roughly 366 million jobs. For 2026, tourism growth is projected at 3.2%, while the global economy is expected to grow by 2.4%.
Mexico remains a significant player in the global tourism market, maintaining a leading position in terms of the sector's contribution to its national GDP. Key competitive advantages for the country include tourism infrastructure, connectivity, and hospitality culture.
In a separate industry focus, the Tourism Innovation Summit 2026 (TIS2026) in Seville, Spain, will examine how connectivity and digital experiences are redefining leisure travel. The summit will address the shift from viewing destinations as isolated products to integrated travel experiences encompassing inspiration, booking, transport, and on-site activities. Industry leaders from airlines, cruise lines, and travel platforms will discuss sustainability, technological integration, and profitability in an increasingly digital market.
