Global tourism trends shift amid climate change and Albania's rapid growth

Global tourism is undergoing significant shifts driven by climate change, geopolitical tensions, and a move toward sustainability. According to an OECD report, member countries welcomed a record 847 million international tourists in 2025, a 3.4% increase from the previous year. However, extreme weather, such as heatwaves and wildfires, is altering travel patterns, with many tourists opting for cooler destinations in Northern Europe or avoiding peak summer months.

In response to these challenges, the industry is shifting toward responsible tourism models that focus on managing visitor flows, supporting local economies, and promoting less crowded destinations. Travelers are increasingly seeking flexibility in bookings and prioritizing destinations perceived as safe amid geopolitical instability.

Amidst these global trends, Albania has emerged as a notable success story. The British magazine ‘Which?’ highlighted the country’s dramatic transformation over the last decade, noting that visitor numbers rose from approximately 4 million to around 12 million in 2025. The country is gaining recognition for the Albanian Riviera, the dynamic culture of Tirana, and UNESCO World Heritage sites in Berat and Gjirokastra.
