Global trade dynamics shift as USMCA and Mercosur-EU deals face new realities

Regional trade dynamics are shifting as major agreements face geopolitical pressures and new opportunities. In North America, the future of the USMCA (T-MEC) is being shaped by United States policies aimed at reducing trade deficits and attracting manufacturing jobs, moving away from decades of open trade policy. Experts from CETYS Universidad note that these geopolitical motivations make negotiations more difficult for Mexico and create uncertainty for long-term investment.

In South America, the long-awaited trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union is beginning to impact regional economies. Argentine Undersecretary of Foreign Trade, Carolina Cuenca, highlighted that the deal provides tariff benefits for 98 percent of existing goods. In provinces like Corrientes, the agreement is expected to benefit key sectors such as rice, citrus, and the forestry industry by eliminating tariffs and facilitating the import of essential machinery.
