Regenerative tourism and deep travel trends shape future industry

The global travel industry is undergoing a structural shift toward sustainability and deeper engagement, moving beyond traditional luxury and simple sightseeing. A significant emerging trend is regenerative travel, which seeks to leave destinations better than they were found through ecosystem restoration, such as coral reef protection and reforestation, and support for local community infrastructure.

Research indicates a growing demand for meaningful experiences. Booking.com’s 2026 Sustainable Travel research, involving 32,500 travelers, found that 85% of respondents consider sustainable travel important, while 74% factor in extreme-weather risks when planning trips. Additionally, many travelers are opting to avoid crowds and travel outside peak seasons.

This evolution is characterized by a move from “check-in” tourism—focused on superficial photography—to “check-deep” experiences. This involves longer stays, closer contact with local communities, and participation in traditional crafts or local life to create a sense of belonging. This shift is driven largely by Millennials and Generation Z, who prioritize environmental stewardship and social responsibility in their premium service selections.
