Global tourism shifts toward experiential and slow travel trends

Global tourism is undergoing a significant transformation as travelers shift toward experiential, meaningful, and slow travel. In Italy, the “In Collina” conference in Valpantena highlighted enotourism as a vital driver for local economic growth, emphasizing the importance of authenticity and sustainable hospitality in wine-growing regions.

In Australia, experiential groups like Journey Beyond are capitalizing on the desire for immersive journeys, offering rail trips across the Outback via The Ghan and Indian Pacific, alongside sea expeditions to the Great Barrier Reef. This aligns with trends among younger generations who prioritize the journey as much as the destination.

Furthermore, modern pilgrimage trails are seeing a renaissance. Ancient routes such as the Camino de Santiago in Spain, the Shikoku Pilgrimage in Japan, and the Via Francigena in Italy are attracting record numbers of walkers seeking digital detoxes and personal reflection rather than strictly religious experiences.

Experts note that the definition of cultural tourism is expanding. It no longer focuses solely on museums and monuments but increasingly incorporates gastronomy, wine, and urban exploration. As Claudio Visentin of USI observes, the integration of food and local lifestyle has become a central component of the modern traveler's cultural pursuit.
