Global travel patterns are shifting in 2026 as travelers move away from overcrowded iconic landmarks toward lesser-known destinations and more reciprocal international routes.

Overtourism at major sites has led to a rise in interest for quieter locales. Malta has been identified as a highly overcrowded destination, while interest in smaller European cities has seen a 35% worldwide increase. Slovenia has emerged as a major beneficiary of this trend, reporting a 286% increase in bookings. Other rising alternatives include the Adriatic shores of Albania.

Simultaneously, travel between China and Europe is experiencing a surge in bidirectional mobility. This shift is driven by strategic visa policy reforms, such as China’s unilateral visa exemption for citizens from over 30 European nations, including France, Germany, and Italy. This liberalization, combined with digital integration, is facilitating increased cultural and economic exchange between the two regions.
