WMO reports record greenhouse gas concentrations in 2025

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has released its 22nd annual Greenhouse Gas Bulletin, revealing that concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) reached unprecedented levels in 2025.

Average global CO2 concentrations rose to 426.8 parts per million (ppm), representing 153% of pre-industrial levels from 1750. Methane concentrations reached 1,948 parts per billion (ppb), or 267% of pre-industrial levels, while nitrous oxide reached 339.1 ppb, or 126% of pre-industrial levels.

While the CO2 growth rate of 2.8 ppm between 2024 and 2025 was slightly lower than the surge seen during the 2023-2024 El Niño period, the overall rate of CO2 concentration growth has tripled since the 1960s. WMO Deputy Secretary-General Ko Barrett warned that these gases are trapping an unprecedented amount of heat, increasing the risk of extreme weather and economic instability. Experts noted that the last 11 years have been the warmest on record and that the long lifetime of CO2 will impact the global climate for decades or even centuries.
