Global warming threatens food security and human health
Global temperatures continue to rise annually, leading to severe consequences for living beings and ecosystems. Recent findings published in The Lancet Planetary Health indicate that rising temperatures pose a significant threat to human health, particularly for individuals over the age of 60. If global temperatures exceed the 1.5-degree average, approximately 22% of this demographic may face dangerous heat levels for at least one month per year, reaching a state defined as ‘uncompensable thermal stress.’
Beyond human health, climate shifts and phenomena such as El Niño are impacting agricultural productivity. Reductions in crop yields for both wild and cultivated plants threaten the income of farmers and ranchers, ultimately endangering global food security. While international climate conferences establish various commitments, many governments have been criticized for failing to take sufficient action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
