Global wheat markets face volatility from supply and geopolitical risks

The global wheat market is experiencing significant volatility driven by geopolitical tensions in the Black Sea and climatic challenges in Europe. Uncertainty regarding Ukrainian exports remains a central factor, as attacks on port infrastructure and vessels are estimated to have reduced Ukraine's export capacity by approximately one-third, increasing transport costs.

In Europe, heatwaves during the critical grain-filling stage have caused substantial damage. Estimates suggest a loss of roughly 9 million tons of cereals, resulting in economic damages exceeding €2 billion. The MARS observatory projects EU soft wheat yields to be about 4% lower than last year, with France and Germany facing revised production estimates of 32 million and 21.9 million tons, respectively.

In North America, spring durum wheat conditions are generally satisfactory, though rising temperatures and lower humidity have raised some concerns. The Wheat Quality Council in the US estimated yields at 48 bushels per acre. While these factors, alongside global availability, may prevent an explosive price surge, market analysts anticipate that producer prices will trend higher through early autumn due to the combination of reduced supply and sustained international demand.
