Global Wildfire Emissions Hit Record Low as Africa's Fire Season Shortens

Satellite data from the European Copernicus climate service show that worldwide carbon emissions from burning vegetation have dropped to their lowest level in the 25‑year record, about half the amount measured in the early 2000s. The decline stems mainly from reduced fire activity in Africa and Asia, while North America and Europe are experiencing larger, more intense wildfires but contribute less than one‑eighth of global fire emissions.

A new study by researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences links the African trend to a shortening of the continent’s dry season. Later‑ending rains delay the onset of the period when grasses dry out, pushing the start of the fire season back by roughly 1.8 days in northern Africa and 0.4 days in the south. Consequently, burned area across Africa has declined markedly between 2003 and 2022, especially during peak fire months.

Experts such as fire scientist Mike Flannigan (Thompson Rivers University) note the paradox of rising local wildfire severity alongside a global decrease in fire‑related emissions, emphasizing the importance of changing agricultural practices and fire management in shaping these trends.
