Global wind power faces massive replacement and cost crisis by 2030

Analysts warn that by 2030 between 85 % and 90 % of the world’s existing wind turbines will have reached the end of their design life. To maintain capacity, roughly 35,000‑40,000 turbines would need to be decommissioned and replaced each year, a process expected to cost $90‑150 billion worldwide for dismantling alone. The construction of new turbines for the 2025‑2050 period could add another $3‑4 trillion in spending.

The wave of retirements will also generate huge volumes of non‑recyclable composite blades and other waste, while the demand for rare‑earth magnets used in turbine generators could triple, with China currently supplying about 80 % of the global supply. These factors combine to create a potential economic and environmental crisis for the renewable‑energy sector as public subsidies fall and fossil‑fuel restrictions tighten.
