Global wine consumption and bulk exports face significant declines
Global wine consumption and trade are experiencing a downturn. According to data from OIV and AAWE Wine Economics, worldwide consumption fell by approximately 570 million liters in 2025, a 2.7% decrease from the previous year. Major markets saw significant declines, including Italy, which dropped by 210.5 million liters (9.4%), and the United States, which saw a 4.2% reduction. Other notable decreases occurred in Germany, China, and France, with China recording a 13% decline.
In contrast, some markets showed growth. Brazil saw a 41.9% increase in volume, and Romania's consumption rose by 11%, reaching 350 million liters.
The bulk wine segment is also facing challenges. An analysis by Del Rey AWM for the World Bulk Wine Exhibition indicates that global bulk wine exports lost approximately €312 million in value during the 12 months ending in March 2026. Bulk wine exports fell 11.8% in value and 10.3% in volume, a contraction that outpaced the broader global wine trade, which fell 8.8% in value and 6.6% in volume during the same period.
