Malawi launches 20MW battery storage to boost stability

Malawi has commissioned a 20‑megawatt, 40‑megawatt‑hour battery energy storage system at the Kanengo sub‑station in Lilongwe. The project, funded with about $20 million (K35 billion) by the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet, is intended to capture surplus solar power and discharge it during peak demand, thereby reducing average outages from four hours to less than two hours and supporting the country’s goal of 70 % electricity access by 2030. ESCOM officials stress that the system is a step toward greater grid stability but will not eliminate load‑shedding overnight, and three additional BESS facilities totaling 60 MW are planned.

Globally, battery storage capacity is projected to grow sixfold by 2030, a 42 % CAGR, with China and the United States together accounting for roughly 74.6 % of worldwide capacity. Companies such as Jinko ESS have signed a 40 MWh project in Germany, SERMATEC delivered a 1.6 MWh system in Austria, and ESS Tech secured a 500 MWh sodium‑ion supply deal in the United States. Large‑scale storage projects are also underway in China’s Shandong province, Brazil’s expanding BESS market, and India’s 3.62 GWh of capacity in Rajasthan.
