GlobalFoundries expands Dresden fab with €1.1 billion investment
GlobalFoundries has reached a construction milestone with the topping-out of its SPRINT expansion project in Dresden, Germany. The €1.1 billion investment aims to increase the facility's annual production capacity to over one million 300mm wafers by the end of 2028, positioning it as Europe’s largest foundry site.
The expansion is designed to support critical sectors including automotive, aerospace, industrial IoT, and defense. Supported by the European Chips Act, the project seeks to strengthen resilient European supply chains and provide secure access to advanced semiconductor technologies.
Alongside the expansion news, GlobalFoundries announced its next-generation FDX Fusion semiconductor platform. This fully depleted silicon-on-insulator (FD-SOI) technology is specifically engineered for Physical AI applications, such as robotics and smart vehicles. The platform aims to provide digital performance comparable to 7nm-class technology while integrating analog, mixed-signal, and high-performance radio-frequency capabilities to balance computing power with energy efficiency at the edge.
