GlobalFoundries to build two NY chip plants with $21B Japanese investment

GlobalFoundries has been selected to build and operate two new semiconductor manufacturing facilities in Malta, New York, as part of a major US-Japan trade and investment initiative. The project is expected to be financed by up to $21 billion in capital provided by Japan. The first facility, a 300mm fab, is slated to begin operations in 2029 with an initial $10 billion investment, while a second $10 billion investment is planned for a subsequent facility.

The expansion is projected to create approximately 27,000 construction and supply-chain jobs and over 1,000 highly skilled manufacturing roles. As part of the agreement, the US Department of Commerce will acquire an equity stake of approximately 4% in GlobalFoundries. Additionally, the company will redirect $955 million from existing CHIPS Act funding toward advanced packaging and silicon photonics technologies.

In Europe, GlobalFoundries is also expanding its Dresden, Germany facility through the SPRINT project. This €1.1 billion expansion aims to increase annual capacity to over 1 million 300mm wafers by 2028 and will focus on mass-producing the next-generation FDX Fusion FD-SOI platform for Physical AI applications.
