Globalfoundries invests 1.1 billion euros to expand Dresden plant

Globalfoundries (GF) has celebrated the topping-out ceremony for the expansion of its manufacturing facility in Dresden, Germany, as part of its 'Sprint' project. The company is investing 1.1 billion euros to increase its annual production capacity from 950,000 to over one million 300-millimeter wafers by the end of 2028.

The expansion aims to position Dresden as Europe’s largest foundry location, focusing on technologies for 'Physical AI'—AI-driven robotics used in the automotive, aerospace, defense, and industrial IoT sectors. The project also emphasizes providing secure, localized data flows and production processes within Europe to meet high security requirements for critical infrastructure.

The investment is supported by 495 million euros in funding from the European Chips Act, alongside support from the German federal government and the Free State of Saxony. Since 2009, Globalfoundries has invested more than 10 billion euros in the Dresden site, which currently employs approximately 3,000 people.
