Globus hypermarket in Czech Republic reports 70% of sales via contactless payments

Contactless payments were first tested at a Globus hypermarket in Prague‑Čakovice on 20 July 2011. Fourteen years later, contactless transactions now account for about 70 % of all sales at Globus stores, according to spokesperson Zdeněk Vesecký.

In the first half of this year customers made more than 25 million cash‑less transactions, a year‑on‑year increase of 7 %. The chain expects to surpass 50 million cash‑less payments by the end of the calendar year, with the overwhelming majority being contactless. Most newly issued payment cards support contactless, and the method is also used via smartphones, payment rings and smartwatches.

A recent FiskalPRO survey shows 60 % of Czech shoppers pay in cash at most once a week, and half of them carry less than 500 CZK. Seventy‑five percent said the lack of a contactless option would deter them from buying, indicating that cashless payment has become a basic expectation for consumers.
