Mexico's INE expands media monitoring and electoral preparations for 2026-2027 elections

The Instituto Nacional Electoral (INE) approved a new methodology to monitor radio and television coverage during the 2026‑2027 federal electoral cycle. The catalog will include 73 media outlets in the precampaign phase and 503 during the campaign, covering news programs, debate shows and entertainment slots. Fourteen variables will be tracked, focusing on political violence, gender discrimination, indirect discursive disqualification of candidates and other equity indicators.

The council rejected proposals to add monitoring of alleged criminal links of candidates and of content generated with artificial intelligence, keeping the scope to traditional informational criteria. Parallel to the monitoring plan, the INE announced pilot tests of electronic voting machines in Tamaulipas and broader trials ahead of 2027.

In related developments, the newly registered parties Somos México and PAZ took their first ever virtual oath before the INE’s General Council, while the PAN’s new state leadership in Tamaulipas pledged internal unity ahead of the 2027 elections. These actions are part of a coordinated effort to ensure transparency, legal compliance and democratic participation in Mexico’s upcoming elections.
