Gloria Steinem dies at 92 shortly before memoir release
Feminist activist and author Gloria Steinem has died at the age of 92. Her death occurred on September 2, three weeks prior to the scheduled publication of her tenth book and third memoir, ‘An Unexpected Life’.
Steinem’s final work is described as a collage of memories, autobiographical reflections, and essay collections. The memoir includes a dedication to her late friend Wilma Mankiller, the former Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. Her passing, followed shortly by the death of poet and activist Robin Morgan, has prompted widespread tributes celebrating her influential role in the women’s rights movement.
In reflections on her legacy, former students of Bishop McDonnell Memorial, an all-girls Catholic high school in Brooklyn, noted how trailblazers like Steinem helped shape the consciousness of women seeking equality.
