Gloria Steinem, feminist icon and activist, dies at 92
Gloria Steinem, a prominent journalist, writer, and leading figure of the second-wave feminist movement, has died at the age of 92. Her death was announced by her official foundation, stating she passed away peacefully at her home in Manhattan.
Steinem was a central voice in the struggle for gender equality, reproductive freedom, and workplace rights. She was a co-founder of Ms. Magazine in 1971, which served as a major platform for feminist discourse. Her activism extended to political representation through the co-founding of the National Women’s Political Caucus, as well as the establishment of the Ms. Foundation for Women and the Women’s Media Center.
Beyond women's rights, Steinem was a staunch advocate for LGBTQ rights and racial equality, working to build coalitions across various marginalized identities. In recognition of her contributions, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in 2013.
