Glottopolitics and linguistic inequality discussed in Chihuahua

Adrián Moreno, head of the Department of Ethnic Cultures and Diversity at the Chihuahua State Secretariat of Culture, has highlighted the concept of 'glotopolítica' (glottopolitics) to explain how language intersects with power and social inequality.

Glottopolitics examines how decisions regarding which languages receive recognition in institutional spaces can create disparities. When certain forms of communication are prioritized over others, communities using indigenous languages may face limited representation and participation in social and institutional structures. To address this, Moreno proposes functional bilingualism as a way to integrate indigenous languages into society beyond mere recognition, ensuring they are actively used within institutional frameworks.
