Gloucester authorities launch clean‑up of 200‑tonne illegal waste dump

More than 200 tonnes of waste, including household rubbish, white goods and asbestos, have been illegally dumped on a two‑acre flood‑plain behind St Oswald’s Retail Park in Gloucester. The site has been used for fly‑tipping since February, burying waste beneath the soil and threatening local residents, wildlife and the environment.

The Environment Agency, Gloucester City Council and police have begun a joint operation to remove the material and prevent further illegal dumping. Environment Agency spokesperson Nick Green warned that the waste will degrade over time and could contaminate water on the flood plain, while Council officer James Dykes said residents may face prosecution if they employ unlicensed waste contractors. Authorities have issued notices to the landowner, exercised legal powers to clear the site, and are urging the public to verify waste‑carrier licences.
