Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly face lawsuits over alleged GLP-1 vision loss risks
Pharmaceutical companies Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly are facing numerous personal injury lawsuits in the United States. Plaintiffs allege that GLP-1 receptor agonists, including Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound, were not adequately labeled with the risk of causing nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION).
NAION is a condition characterized by a sudden, painless reduction in blood flow to the optic nerve, which can lead to permanent vision loss or blindness. Some plaintiffs have reported experiencing vision changes shortly after beginning treatment with these medications.
Both manufacturers have responded to the litigation. Novo Nordisk stated that the lawsuits are “without merit” and that the company is vigorously defending them, noting that its own research has not found a link. Eli Lilly emphasized that patient safety is its top priority and that it is actively monitoring and reporting all safety data, including ophthalmic issues, to the FDA. While some studies have suggested a potential increase in risk for certain users, scientific consensus has not yet established a definitive causal link between GLP-1 drugs and NAION.
