GLP-1 medications drive global shifts in healthcare and consumer spending

The rapid rise of GLP-1 receptor agonists, such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro, is driving significant shifts in global healthcare, consumer behavior, and economic markets.

In Brazil, the market for weight-loss pens has reached between R$ 10 billion and R$ 13.3 billion, accounting for up to 15% of major pharmacy revenues. The approval of semaglutide generics by Anvisa is expected to increase accessibility as patent protections expire.

Consumer spending patterns are also changing. In Germany and Brazil, studies indicate that GLP-1 users spend significantly less on food and dining out, with a notable decrease in the consumption of high-calorie snacks and processed foods. This trend is prompting food corporations like Nestlé to reformulate products to focus on muscle maintenance.

In the United States, the surge in demand has created challenges for insurance coverage and access for patients with non-weight-related diagnoses, such as sleep apnea. Meanwhile, biotechnology firms are exploring new frontiers, including oral delivery systems and drugs designed to mimic the metabolic effects of physical exercise.
