NYU Langone Health study links GLP-1 drugs to male hair loss risk

A genetic study led by NYU Langone Health has identified a potential link between GLP-1 receptor agonist medications—such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound—and an increased risk of male-pattern hair loss. Published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, the research suggests that men with a genetic predisposition to androgenetic alopecia may face a 7% higher risk of hair loss when the GLP-1 pathway is highly active.

Using Mendelian randomization, researchers analyzed the GLP1R gene, which regulates GLP-1 receptor proteins. They found that higher activity in this gene was associated with increased odds of inherited hair loss, even after accounting for factors like hypertension, insulin resistance, and testosterone levels. The study notes that while hair thinning is a frequently reported side effect among users, this provides the first scientific genetic evidence for such a connection.

In a separate trend, the popularity of these weight-loss drugs is impacting other industries. In Brazil, the market for GLP-1 based medications has seen significant growth, prompting beauty and cosmetic companies to develop new scalp care products and hair density treatments to address consumer concerns regarding hair thinning.
