GLP-1 drugs linked to increased nail and hair issues
New international research presented at the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) Congress in Vienna has identified a significant association between GLP-1 receptor agonist use and various dermatological issues. The study, part of the SCOP-GLP1 survey, compared 575 GLP-1 users with 1,329 individuals with type 2 diabetes or obesity who had not used the medications.
Findings indicate that GLP-1 users are substantially more likely to report nail problems. Specifically, 39% of users reported nail detachment (onycholysis) compared to 9% of the control group, and 46% reported nail discoloration compared to 17% of controls. Additionally, 66% of users reported at least one nail disorder. The study also noted higher rates of hair loss and reduced hair density among users.
Lead researcher Dr. Charles Taieb noted that while the findings provide the first controlled evidence of an association, they do not establish direct causation. The researchers emphasized that not all symptoms occurring during treatment are necessarily caused by the drugs themselves and called for closer monitoring of nail, hair, and scalp health in patients using these diabetes and weight-loss treatments.
