GLP-1 Drugs Linked to Lower Fracture Risk in US Adults with Type 2 Diabetes

A UCLA Health study published in JAMA Network Open examined electronic health records of nearly 134,000 U.S. adults aged 50‑90 with type 2 diabetes. Researchers compared new users of GLP‑1 receptor agonists with new users of DPP‑4 inhibitors and found a 21% lower risk of fragility fractures over a three‑year period for the GLP‑1 group, with the greatest reductions in hip, femur and spine fractures. A separate analysis showed the reduced risk was present only among participants with type 2 diabetes, not in a matched non‑diabetic cohort. The authors emphasized that the findings come from a retrospective observational study and do not prove causation; prospective research is needed. “Fractures are relatively uncommon, so very large studies are needed to detect a meaningful difference,” said Dr. Christopher Hamad.
