GLP-1 drugs linked to lower tuberculosis risk in diabetes patients

Clinical evidence suggests that glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, commonly used for type 2 diabetes and obesity, may reduce the risk of tuberculosis (TB) in diabetic patients. A global analysis of health records published in Nature Communications compared GLP-1 therapies against four other major diabetes drug classes to investigate susceptibility to the infection.

Research indicates that patients using GLP-1 agonists, such as semaglutide and liraglutide, show a statistically significant reduction in TB incidence compared to those on conventional anti-diabetic regimens. This protective effect is hypothesized to result from improved glycemic control and the modulation of systemic inflammation.

Diabetes is known to triple the risk of developing active TB because chronic hyperglycemia impairs immune functions, such as macrophage activity and cytokine production. By activating GLP-1 receptors in immune cells, these medications may help restore metabolic homeostasis and dampen the chronic inflammation that leaves diabetic patients vulnerable to Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
